Chrome Alloy Welding

Setup:
Stick Electrode: Use 308L stainless steel AC or DC 1/8” or 3/16”. 7018 DC or 3/16”.
Wire Feed: Mild steel wire .030 or .035 with CO2 or Tri-mix gas.
Amperage: Use as low an amperage as possible. 90-110 preferable.
Directions: place the part to be welded on top of the chrome alloy insert. If the part to be welded to the insert does not fit recess of insert securely grind the part for a tighter fit. Tack weld insert to steel.
Pre-heating: Heat alloy insert and steel part to a minimum of 500 degrees. After preheating weld full bead starting at one end of the casting and continue the full length of the part. Pre-heating reduces thermal metal shock to a minimum.
Cooling: Allowing to cool at room temperature is fine but avoid drafts. We recommend placing sweeps in dray sand or fireplace ashes. Never place welded parts on concrete floors.
During or shortly after weld assembly it is possible that cracks may appear. If you have followed the procedure correctly the castings will not fall off and will provide acres of trouble free wear.
